Marcelo DoRio
CEO-in-Residence, Consumer
Serial entrepreneur and investor with 30+ years of experience founding, scaling, and successfully exiting consumer businesses, brought to founder-led companies navigating growth, transition, and what comes next.
Marcelo DoRio is a serial entrepreneur, investor, and Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute Fellow with more than three decades of experience building and exiting consumer businesses across Brazil and the United States. His career has been defined by a consistent ability to identify market opportunities, build brands from the ground up, and scale them to the point of successful acquisition. A firsthand understanding of the full founder journey that few operators can claim.
His most notable venture is Cervejaria Devassa, a pioneering brewery he founded in Rio de Janeiro that became one of the most recognized consumer beverage brands in Brazil before being acquired by Heineken. That transaction, along with his earlier work establishing a portfolio of influential hospitality venues in Rio, gave Marcelo deep practical experience in the consumer and food and beverage space, from concept and brand-building through operations, scale, and ultimately a strategic exit.
Beyond his founding roles, Marcelo is an active investor and board member, serving as a Venture Partner LP at SaaSholic and on the Board of Directors at Mergus Ventures. He has also served as a business mentor at Techstars, working directly with early-stage founders on strategy, growth, and execution. His academic background includes executive education from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, reinforcing the blend of entrepreneurial instinct and strategic discipline that has characterized his career.
Applying Founder and Consumer Experience in Founder-Led Businesses
Marcelo has sat exactly where FCL’s founders sit. He has built consumer businesses from nothing, navigated the operational complexity of scaling them, and made the decision to sell, and he has done it more than once. That experience is not theoretical. It is the practical knowledge of what it costs to build something, what it feels like to hand it over, and what it takes to make sure it continues to thrive.
His background in consumer brand-building, multi-unit operations, and investor relationships gives him a versatile perspective across the consumer sector, from product and beverage companies to hospitality-adjacent and experience-driven businesses. At FCL, that perspective is applied to help founders make confident decisions, strengthen their operations, and ensure their business is positioned for long-term success well beyond the closing of a deal.
Role at FCL Capital Partners
Marcelo serves as CEO-in-Residence for FCL’s consumer investments. He works alongside founders and management teams to support leadership continuity, brand and operational strategy, and post-transaction growth. His particular focus is on founder-led consumer companies at an inflection point, whether they are preparing for a transition, evaluating a partnership, or looking to scale, bringing the credibility of someone who has built, sold, and invested in businesses across the full lifecycle.
